The Purple Day Gallery

Purple Day is May 17, 2007.

What is Purple Day?

In 1973, fourth grade teacher Peggy O’Neil began an important tradition at Hastings Elementary School in Westborough, Massachusetts. Each year, Hastings celebrates Purple Day. The mission of Purple Day is described by Hastings thus:

"Purple Day is an attempt by children to change the environment in a tangible way by asking as many people as possible to wear purple on that day. It is an exercise in showing children that they can make a difference in the world around them. It is hoped that they will remember this lesson and continue to feel that they can change things when they grow up by getting involved. Working together, we can make a difference!"

Over the years, Purple Day has come to focus on environmental issues and the important notion that Thinking Globally and Acting Locally can bring about Global Change.

This year, The Purple Store is asking you to dress in your favorite purple on May 18 and send us digital photographs of you holding a sign that says "Purple Day 2007" with a quick note about what city you live in and something you do to help the environment. We’ll be collecting these photographs to share with the kids at Hastings Elementary School to remind them that acting locally can have a global effect especially with a little help from the internet.

Join the Fun!

  1. On Purple Day, May 17, 2007, wear purple.
  2. Make a sign or e-mail us the following: Your Location, "Purple Day 2007", Something you've done for the Environment in the Last Year (See photo below for an example)
  3. Have someone take a digital picture of you on Purple Day (if you've made a sign, include it in the picture)
  4. E-mail us your Purple Day photograph. It will appear on our website and, if we get enough photographs, we'll make a photo album to send to Hastings Elementary School.
