Catwoman - Purrrfect in Purrrple

DC Comics' Catwoman has the ultimate purple outfits. While her skin and hair aren't purple, we're including her because Catwoman is an icon of purple - sexy and powerful. We love Catwoman because she's a wonderfully grey character. She's not 100% good and she's not a total villain, either. She has a certain moral flexibility, if we may borrow the fabulous phrase from Grosse Pointe Blank. She'll fight the worst of the villains on occasion, but she's not a crime fighter. Just when you think she's a heroine, she wanders off with all the loot that was supposed to be rescued. Catwoman has an amazing and complex history. She's been with Batman since Issue #1. If you want to really know Catwoman, start there, and work your way up to her annual comic, Catwoman, started in 1994.

The Cheshire Cat

The Cheshire Cat has not always been purple. The original Through the Looking Glass artist, John Tenniel, originally illustrated the cat in a ginger-brown. It wasn't until 1951, when Disney released their animated version of Alice in Wonderland that the famous, trouble-making, perception-of-reality-challenging cat donned his purple and pink stripes.

Grape Ape

Grape Ape is a 40 foot tall purple ape. Most famous for his 1970s TV show and guest appearances on Scooby Doo and Tom & Jerry, our favorite Grape Ape quote is from his lesser known 2-issue comic series:
    Bystander: "A PURPLE APE?"
Grape Ape: "I LIKE BEING PURPLE. GRAPE APE. GRAPE APE."

The Joker

The Joker is the purple-clad villain undermining Batman and Robin in comic books and on the TV and movie screens since his debut in DC comic book Batman#1 (1940). Did you know...? The Joker was originally the Red Hood. As a laboratory worker earlier in his life, he decided to steal $1,000,000 and retire. Red Hood was his version of Robin Hood, but he wasn't just stealing from the rich. On the eve of his final steal that brings him his goal of $1,000,000, Batman and Robin corner him on a factory catwalk. Trying to escape capture, he dives into a chemical catch basin, which is responsible for his appearance. Thus does the Red Hood become the purple-clad Joker.

Disney's Maleficent

Disney's version of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale introduces the purple and black clad Maleficent, who can morph into a purple and black dragon. Affronted when the king and queen don't invite her to their daughter's birth, Maleficent bestows upon the infant princess a curse concerning a certain spinning wheel needle. We like Maleficent because she has a wicked laugh and who doesn't dig a purple dragon?
